Participants in this workshop will expand their understanding of the relationship between refusal behaviors and psychiatric diagnoses. Beginning with a definition of refusals (often referred to as opposition and/or defiance) the discussion will then delineate specific diagnoses and patterns to consider when working with students who refuse to do things and/or refuse to stop doing things.  With this knowledge base at hand, the workshop will help participants enrich their skills for developing interventions for such students, expanding beyond behavioral systems that presume a student is able to consistently change their behavior. Various treatment modalities will be considered and put into the framework of a diagnostic case conceptualization. Case examples will be discussed, and participants will be encouraged to being their experiences into the learning process.

Speaker's Bio:

Dr. Candida Fink is a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist in private practice in Westchester County, New York, She treats children, teens, and young adults with a range of concerns, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and neuropsychiatric disorders such as PANS/PANDAS. Coming from a long line of educators and building on her own experiences, Dr. Fink has always taken a special interest in how mental health and neurodevelopmental challenges affect and are affected by school. Her work in child and adolescent psychiatry spans over 3 decades and includes many years consulting to schools and educational systems.

Dr. Fink is a graduate of the Boston University (Chobanian and Avedisian) School of Medicine. She did her medical internship at Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She then returned to Boston to do her general psychiatry residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and her child fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, both of which are Harvard Medical School affiliated training programs. While at Children’s Hospital Dr. Fink did subspecialty training in neurodevelopmental disorders including autism and intellectual disabilities.

Dr. Fink is the co-author (with Joe Kraynak) of Bipolar Disorder for Dummies, originally published in 2005. The fully updated fourth edition was released in 2023. Her blog,  “Changing Minds,” is published  at PsychologyToday.com and she can also be found on  social media, under the handle @Finkshrink (on Twitter/X) or @FinkshrinkMD on Instagram and TikTok. Dr. Fink is  also the co-host, along with special educator Jo-Ann Berry, of a new podcast, Mental Health Goes to School, that delves into  the intersection of school and mental health, speaking with experts and reflecting on their own years of experience, to understand how school will be a critical part of addressing the youth mental health crisis.

Dr. Fink is a veteran of the military, proudly serving in the US Army Medical Corp through the Massachusetts National Guard and the Federal National Reserves from 1985 to 1993.  She received an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain.
